The Creation and Evolution of the Self by Jeff Carreira and Elizabeth Debold

Examining the miraculous process of individuation, how it has evolved through time, and the possibility of actively guiding it into the future.

Individuation occurs when we develop the capacity to distinguish our psychological world from the external world, when we learn to distinguish between “self” and “other.” It is what gives us our sense of being “someone,” of “self” of “me-ness.”

Our uniquely human capacity to individuate has unleashed explosive creative potentials. It is arguably one of the most significant steps we have taken in our human development. But it also seems to be heading toward an evolutionary dead end. As we better understand the process of individuation, and its role in human development we will be better positioned to consciously guide the next step in our evolving sense of self.
